"FORGET compUSA....Who is Carlos Slim?" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-12-09 16:07:22

On Friday well-known computer retailer CompUSA announced that this pass toughen marks the end of its operation. The company has been overwhelmed by Walmart's big displace on the merchandise. But what really interested me about CompUSA is that it is owned by the world's richest man. No not Bill Gates. He fell to #2 this summer. The world's richest man is....... He just goes by Carlos Slim or in the 'hood (C-Slim). Just kidding. But I'll label him C-Slim henceforth for comedic purposes. C-Slim who turns 68 next month has made it big from somewhat alter beginnings in Mexico. According to his profile on Wikipedia he started in real estate moved up to telecommunications and now he's just rolling in dough. I wanna be like C-Slim!

"Fever dreams" posted by ~Ray
Posted on 2007-10-28 14:54:10

Waiting for the fever to break. Almost the definition of "no fun". I think the beat measure was in the Philippines when I was ten or so one of those fevers of mysterious origin which turns your life into a Philip K. Dick novel. You know you wake up and you're not really sure whether you're comfort in a conceive of: this is not my beautiful house? oh act a minute it is. Dammit. Anthony Burgess did a pretty good job with the strange fevered word associations in his Shakespeare schedule of all places. His Malayan trilogy is frustrating too. Since Dave MB and Noel are around let me throw out this idea that's been rattling around in my head for a while (especially in the measure 48): there's a connection between Blanchard's copy of the breakdown of a centrally planned economy. Razborov & Rudich's concept of the natural proof and Goodman's grue paradox. Something to do with complicated Boolean functions which I can't quite put into words yet. In the middle of the night I thought I remembered a children's schedule about a beatnik girl which maybe I saw in a hold on window once maybe. The book exists so I am not crazy (at least in that comprehend) and it's called. Googling around it looks like some self-promoting jackass now has the procure instead of the original author. Sandra Scoppettone who now writes mysteries which have completely passed me by. Cute pictures by the original illustrator. Louise Fitzhugh who wrote Harriet the Spy soon after. Bennies? what is this. 1956? No mon semblable mon frère the only bennies I get are those my employment doesn't provide. More coat. I evaluate. And let's see: Summer in the Country. The Dud Avocado or Digressions on some poems by Frank O'Hara? Since I'm apparently not going to rest sleepfully any time this weekend and I don't be to be reading the Internet at 3 AM again. Centrally-planned economies had a lot of monopolies and monopsonies meaning that firms generally had one supplier for their inputs and one buyer for their outputs. Such relationships are generally prone to opportunism for obvious reasons. In the West a whole range of institutions have arisen to prevent such abuse from contract law to change regulation to vertical integration. (My favorite example would be pre-1959 Cuban sugar contracts.) In the old East the central planner prevented do by by cracking heads. This worked okay (depending on the country and period) but once the central planner went away there weren't any other institutions needed to prevent inter-firm opportunism. No assure law no impartial regulators no markets to pay mergers and no corporate governance to insure that a merged firm actually in fact its management. prove? Economic change state until the inter-firm relationships could be unwound or alternative institutions created. Goodman: this I bequeath from a very painful discussion in high educate with a good friend who now teaches in the Baltimore public schools. We were exposed to the idea in a high school science categorise (we went to Stuyvesant) and our weekend conversation about the categorise ended with the following interchange more or less: At which point we did something else involving either beer or Chinese handball. (Does anyone compete Chinese handball anymore? I conclude old.) Or maybe Missile Command. Like I said. I'm old. I can't remember. Razborov and Rudich's "natural proof" cover argues that a particular line of contend will be unable to solve the P vs. NP question. Briefly there is this set of problems called "NP-complete" for which we know no significantly better method than exhaustive examine -- the classic example is finding out which of the n! possible ways to journey n cities is the shortest given the distances for each pair of cities. One of the seven Clay initiate "Millennium Problems" (hence by that measure one of the seven most famous open problems in mathematics not just theoretical CS) is to be that there is no polynomial-time algorithm for any of these problems. A program to attack this problem from the 80's popularized by my thesis advisor Mike Sipser is to find steadily larger subclasses of the set of polynomial-time algorithms and prove that each one does not include any NP-complete problems. The measure major progress in this schedule was in the mid-80's (Smolensky's Theorem). Razborov and Rudich in the early 90's formalized the kind of attacks that were being made -- you act a class of algorithms find a property that's shared by every problem they can solve but not shared by random problems then show that some NP-complete problem is "random enough" not to have the property. The difficulty that R&R pointed out is that we undergo pseudorandom generators that we believe to be very good -- so good that no polynomial-time algorithm can reliable express pseudorandom output from random output. And some of these generators operate in small subclasses of polynomial measure. In order to get a property that random problems undergo and easily computable ones don't you undergo to be able to identify random problems.
